Vice President, Develop and Research

Job Summary:  Develop and implement Research & Development strategy in collaboration with functional leaders and manage programs designed to meet these goals and objectives. Plan, direct, drive and control Research and Development activities to accomplish agreed upon long-term strategic and annual operating goals.  Actively seeks outside resources as needed to influence and improve performance. Formulate and execute long-term plans for cost/profit control.

Direct, design and implement a comprehensive product management strategy and processes.  Direct all Research & Development projects/programs to ensure timely delivery of new therapies to the marketplace.  Coordinates cross functional activities and deliverables to assure overall program deliverables are met on budget and on time. Promote use of new technologies and industry-leading trends to product management activities. 

Function as the central resource with design, manufacturing, quality and marketing as the product(s) move to completion and distribution. Engage functional leaders and senior management in resolving conflicts and removing barriers. Ensure that products shipped meet specifications and quality goals. 

Select, develop, and evaluate personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.  Direct those involved in the design, modification, and evaluation of all phases of a specific product or group of products from product definition through production and release (i.e. Product Lifecycle Management).

Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate research and development activities to assure deliverables are on time.
  • Responsible for developing, validating and conducting physical test methods
  • Design, verification and validation of product packaging and/or product applicators
  • Implement and support quality control systems throughout the product development process
  • Maintain proper laboratory safety practices.
  • Execute mechanical assays, physical and analytical test methods and other assays on products and product samples
  • Participate with our multi-functional team, on the development of new regenerative medicine products and manufacturing of current products
  • Prepare technical documents and reports
  • Ensure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices and safety requirements

Summary of essential job functions:

  • Ensure selection of appropriate resources.
  • Recruit top talent into the Research & Development organization.
  • Set goals and objectives for Research & Development resources and ensure alignment of business goals with functional goals.
  • Supports functional leaders in development of functional resources.
  • Provides input for performance review of all functional resources.
  • Set direction and objectives for the Research & Development organization, coach and develop members of your team.  Determine required competencies and the most effective organizational structure.
  • Direct, drive, organize and control Research & Development activities to ensure approved annual operating plans, programs, capital and expense budgets are achieved.  Maintain appropriate communications within and between other functions to support overall business strategies.
  • Proactively interact with strategic Key Opinion Leaders (KOL’s) including physicians and regulators to maximize and accelerate the development of new products.
  • Represent the Research & Development function in the development of business plans and product positioning in the market to meet customer needs. 
  • Interact with marketing, and business development functions to ensure new products meet all necessary requirements, satisfy all other pertinent measures of quality, and are delivered within the budgetary and schedule constraints of the business.
  • Evaluates new technologies as appropriate

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Science or Engineering.  An advanced degree preferred (Ph.D., M.D., MBA).
  • 15 years of progressively more responsible leadership, operating and marketing experience, to produce successful business results.
  • Extensive exposure to marketing, sales, product development and operations. 
  • 10+ years in a management or leadership position.

Key Competencies

  • Experience being in a leadership role in executing development programs including regulatory and commercialization activities required.
  • Ability to integrate all facets of the development process into a successful strategy translating into successful execution of deliverables required.
  • Comprehensive understanding of requirements for successful commercialization of a new product including health economics, reimbursement and pricing required.
  • Demonstrated negotiation and conflict resolution skills, including the ability to influence without clear reporting authority required.
  • Track record of developing people and effective teams required.
  • Good judgment with demonstrated integrity and respect of peers and subordinates
  • Proven ability to effectively interact with customers, especially strategic Key Opinion Leaders
  • Proven ability to operate in a matrix organization and work effectively with company personnel and customers across geographic and organization boundaries.

Abilities Required

  • Ability to travel up to 25%
  • Ability to stand/sit/walk 8+ hours a day
