The Controller for Innovation Works will report directly to the President and CEO.  IW is seeking a hands-on professional with excellent problem-solving and communication skills.  The Controller has the overall responsibility for the internal operations and financial management of the Finance, Payroll, Purchasing, Accounting, and Information Systems departments.  The Controller is also responsible for developing the annual financial plan and budget for IW.  This includes all aspects of accounting, budgeting, taxes, asset management, reporting, and compliance with funding sources' requirements.  The Controller also serves as a member of the IW Investment Committee.  The Controller is a key manager within Innovation Works, and the position requires the highest level of integrity, responsibility, and organizational skills.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Direct responsibility for and supervision of Accounting, Finance, Payroll, Purchasing, and Administration.
  • Development of a detailed annual operating plan, budget, and forecasts.
  • Mentor and develop a direct team of three, managing work allocation, training, problem resolution, performance evaluation, and building an effective team dynamic.
  • Review reconciliations of Trial Balance accounts on a monthly basis.
  • Review all proposal budgets.
  • Ensure IW policies and procedures are in legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions.  Responsible for the development and implementation of financial policies and procedures for grants and contracts transfers, spend downs, and closeouts to ensure compliance. with all applicable funding agency guidelines, regulations, and circulars as needed.
  • Enhance and implement financial systems, process tools, and internal control systems.
  • Assist with and review all month-end closing activities, including general ledger transactions, balance sheet, fund reconciliations, and corporate benefit, facility, and overhead cost allocations.
  • Remain up to date on nonprofit audit practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.  Oversee the annual audit process to both GAAP and GAS audit standards.  Audit includes Federally- required Single Audit.  Manage accounting, compliance, and closeout audits for approximately 20 different funding sources as required.
  • Ensure record keeping meets the requirements of auditors and government agencies.
  • Manage the preparation of the annual Indirect Cost Proposal.
  • Negotiate and review contracts with outside service providers.
  • Manage the preparation and review of all DCED/Federal/Foundation stakeholder reports.
  • Develop detailed operating plans and measurements for all functions under direct supervision.
  • Manage and report compliance and performance of all individual IIF investments and projects.
  • Review the preparation of tax information.
  • Ensure timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial management reporting for federal and state funders, foundations & IW’s board of directors. Oversee the preparation and communication of quarterly and annual financial statements.
  • Preserve and manage all IW records, contracts, and essential documents.
  • Recruit, develop, and retain an efficient and highly skilled staff in accordance with approved budgets.
  • Manage benefits programs, including informing employees of changes in coverage and processing insurance claims.
  • Manage payroll online through ADP.
  • Manage the timekeeping system online through MIP Non-profit software and UKG.
  • Analyze CRM needs, recommend improvements, and oversee enhancements and integration of databases into IW’s Salesforce system.
  • Review project invoices to ensure that investments are within budget.
  • Prepare invoices for all investments within IW’s Salesforce system.
  • Prepare journal entries and cash receipts.

 

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Direct experience in financial and accounting management required, experience with either start-up technology companies and/or non-profit organizations desired
  • Must have direct experience in GAAP and GAS audit standards
  • Direct experience in management and development of internal financial controls, human resource policy and procedures, and contract administration required
  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in Finance/Business Administration or related discipline required, MBA and/or CPA desired
